Consular Assistance

The Government of the Republic of Ghana strongly encourages Ghanaian citizens, who are either resident in the Netherlands or are temporarily in the country, to register with The Hague Mission so that the Consular Section can assist when the need arises. Registration is confidential, without charges, and will not be divulged to third parties.

Registering with Ghana’s Missions will facilitate the replacement of travel documents, and also make it easier to render support in cases of accidents, deaths, or when in distress.

Living in the Netherlands

All Foreigners are subject to the host country’s laws and Ghanaians are strongly urged to abide by the laws of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. While Consular officials are limited as to how they can assist a Ghanaian if they get into trouble with the law; for instance, represent you in legal proceedings or pay your legal fees or other expenses, they can perform a variety of vital services, which include providing a list of attorneys, assisting in contacting your family in Ghana if you so wish, monitoring your welfare, ensuring that your Human Rights are respected by the authorities, as well as the conditions under which you are being held in the Netherlands.

If you are arrested, immediately ask to speak to a Consular Officer at the Ghana Embassy. Under international agreements, the Ghana Government has a right to provide consular assistance to you upon your request. If your request to speak to your consul cannot be honoured immediately, we urge you to be persistent.

Although most Ghanaian students who travel to the Netherlands for a short stay will have a safe and enjoyable trip, some may encounter serious problems. Ghanaian students are, therefore, strongly encouraged to register their stay as soon as they arrive in the Netherlands with the Embassy of Ghana in The Hague.

The Consular Section will do everything they can to help you. Please note that we offer appropriate help based on individual circumstances.

This advice applies to Ghanaian nationals in the Dutch Antilles. We strongly urge you to contact the Consular Section using the following contact details.
